Tuesday Tips and Tricks

Hello everyone!

I would like to introduce our new Tuesday blog segment to you!

From here on out, Tuesday is going to be dedicated to Copic coloring Tips and Tricks!
We will be sharing various tips and tricks so that you get the most out of your Copic markers. If you have a suggestion for what you would like us to show, please feel free to leave us a comment and we will do our best to show you!

Today's Tip is about making black using your Copics.

As you might already know, there is actually a black marker, number 100, but if you use it, you don't get any sort of shading.

Real black objects still aren't purely flat black. Take this black cat for instance:
If you look at that cat, you can see lighter areas and darker areas.  So to replicate these variations using Copics, you will need a set of grays.  There are actually quite a few shades of gray to choose from, depending on the undertones that you want your image to have.

For blacks, I typically stick to using the Cool Grays, which are designated by the letter C (partially because they come in the Copic Ciao marker style, which happens to me by favorite and partially because they look very realistic for your basic everyday black look).

Now here is very simple example:
I colored the bat in with the following Copic colors: C3, C5, C6, and C7.  You can see that the bat comes out looking black! Easy huh?

Here is another example you might remember from a previous post:

The little witch hat is also shaded in using various Cool Grey Copics.

Sneak Peek of things to come. . .

Hi fellow Copic lovers!

Today I have another Christmas Card to share with you. This card features some stamps that will make their debut at iCopic.com very soon!

Snowmen are something I get asked about on occasion so I thought I would take a moment to share my snowman coloring tricks with you!

I generally outline my snowmen on the INSIDE of the lines using C1, just to give the snow some dimension.

To achieve a more snowy blue look, you could use B0000 and B000 to give you a subtle blue look. If you would like to add a little more depth, then you could add in B02 for slightly darker blue shading.

I colored the little snowman in with the following Copic colors from

iCopic

  • C1 (I outlined the snow and right inside the  snowman with the one to add a little dimension)
  • C6 (for his buttons)
  • B00
  • B02
  • YR02
  • B29

Fight for the Cure!

We’ve got an early treat for Challenge #5 Winner #10 Darla! We were so blown away by your creative use of our color challenge and loved how you incorporated the colors, oh and the vampire/Dracula, we can’t get enough of. Congratulations!

For Challenge #6 we’ve decided to incorporate a good cause along with a color theme to inspire your creativity. As most of you know, this month is Breast Cancer Awareness month and we want to inspire support and courage for a cause that not only effects women, but affects the communities we live in. We’re taking a stance to raise awareness and inspire hope for those who are affected by Breast Cancer.

Along with a color theme of pink white and black, each entry must have the pink breast cancer awareness ribbon visible on your entry. This does not mean it must be the main focus of your creation; however it needs to be present.

One lucky winner will receive a roll of our newest Washi Tape along with your choice of 4 pink colored Copic Ciao Markers!

To enter, follow these easy steps:
1. Become a follower of our blog, if you aren’t already.
2. Post your original creation with your entry and the link back to iCopic's Color Challenge on your blog. You can make ANY type of project that includes the use of Copics: greeting card, scrapbook page, altered art, 3D project, illustration, etc. Anything goes as long as Copics are used!
3. The colors need to be as close to the challenge’s color theme as possible.
The challenge starts Monday, October 18th and will end on Sunday, October 31st. The winner will be chosen by the True Random Number Generator.

iCopic New Arrival & 1 Day Sale

10/3/10

Ho Ho Ho! Merry Christmas!

I know we haven't even celebrated Halloween yet, but I am enjoying my Christmas Card making so much!!

iCopic New Arrival & 1 Day Sale

This week, I had a chance to work with the Xmas Sweeties stamp set from The Greeting Farm and it is a must have for those Christmas cards. For the next two weeks (at least! LOL), I am going to be sharing many more cards using this adorable stamp set! This set is available in the iCopic store so be sure to grab one today.

Look at this cutie:

I colored him in with the following Copic colors.
For the Skin: E00
For the Belt buckle: Y38
For the red clothes: R27 and R29
For the hair: Y11, Y15, and Y21

Samantha's Copic Tips:
*REDS: I have had a lot of difficulty blending reds and so I have experimented a bit to determine what works best for me. Are you ready to hear my secret? OK so when laying down the first layer of red, I use my lightest color and use a VERY LIGHT TOUCH, I lay down just enough ink so that the area looks red, but I do not saturate the paper. Then again, I go in with a very light touch with my darker color. When blending, I continue to use a light touch, taking care not to lay down too much ink. With reds, a little bit of ink goes a LONG way.

*Think about your image: When deciding what areas of the image need to be darker vs lighter, think about the image as if it were a 3D image. If someone is wearing a hat, chances are, there is going to be a natural shadow given off by the brim of the hat. So I thought about that and decided to make his hair darker near the hat. So before you color, take a moment to just think about where the natural shadows might be.
